Spectral Conjuring of a Cinematic Present by Sam Nightingale
The Cinemas Project

To celebrate the culmination of the first iteration of The Cinemas Project, a book has been published that catalogues the commissioned artists’ work as well as highlighting some of the sites of cinema that were included in the project.
Included within the book is Spectral Conjuring of a Cinematic Present, Sam Nightingale’s evocative photo-essay that maps the spectral spaces of cinema in the locations that featured in The Cinemas Project. The series of images presents the sites of cinema both existing and disappeared. These are replaced or repurposed spaces in which the spectral form of the cinema building and its projections may or may not still exist.
The book also contains essays on the work of Brook Andrew and Mikala Dwyer, as well as extensive interviews with Tom Nicholson and Bianca Hester regarding their work that was produced for The Cinemas Project. The book also contains essays by renowned cinema historians Adrian Martin and Ian Christie.
The Cinemas Project Book will be launched on Tuesday 16th December 2014.
